Labor of Love

By:  Betty Predmore

Several months ago, my family and I were perusing the shops in a local vacation spot and I came across the most beautiful rustic farm table. I fell in love with the table, but not the price. As I pointed out my beautiful find to my husband, he assured me that he could build one for me, even nicer than the one I was coveting at that moment.

My wonderful hubby made good on his promise. Hours turned into days, and days into weeks as he spent every spare minute crafting that table for me. Countless times he asked me to inspect this or decide on that. The amount of effort he put into making me the “table of my dreams” was a true labor of love. Because of the energy he put into that, I now have a visual reminder of my husband’s love for me that will last far beyond my time on this earth, and will be handed down through the many generations that will gather around it in the spirit of love, family, and fellowship.

When I think about the love and care that was put into making that table, it reminds me of the love and care that comes down from Heaven for us all. God loved us so much that He sent His son to die for us. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16. What an incredible labor of love! Jesus loved us so much that he took the pain and shame of the cross for us, so that we could have the opportunity to be free from our sins. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24 What an awesome labor of love!

That table is my husband’s handiwork, his beautiful creation built to fulfill a specific need. We are God’s handiwork, His beautiful creation, created for a specific purpose. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10. We are created to do good for others. We are created to share His love.

Daily our God is working in our lives. Daily He is making a way for us. Daily He provides us opportunities to serve Him, and to demonstrate His love to others. Daily He offers us forgiveness. Daily He desires for us to draw closer to Him. Daily He loves us. And just like my husband was willing to work hour upon hour, day after day, out of love for me, to give me something my heart desired, God is there hour upon hour, day after day, out of love for us, to give us our heart’s desires. His great labor of love is for all who are willing to trust and surrender to Him. Such love as His…there is none greater.

He Is Able

I haven’t posted anything onto my Song in My Heart series for a while. It’s not that I don’t have a song in my heart, life just gets so busy. So today, I am taking a moment to share, in the hopes of encouraging someone with the song that is in my heart today.

He Is Able
He is able, more than able,
To accomplish what concerns me today.
He is able, more than able,
To handle anything that comes my way.

Are there things that concern you today? Are worries clouding your mind? Are you looking for the answers? Is your load too heavy?

Well, my friends, the good news is that HE is more than able to carry our load. “Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”Psalm 55:22. All the things that are on our minds today, all the concerns that might have kept us awake last night, anything that is troubling us, He will take it all. When we give our fears and concerns to God, in full trust and assurance that He hears us, we can fully rely on Him to meet our needs. In Him all the answers can be found.

What a great comfort it is to know that God is in control! How awesome to know that He’s “got our back”! Don’t let your troubles steal your joy for one day longer! Give them over to the One who is Mighty, the One who is Holy, the One who is Powerful! Give it all to Him…because He is able!

A Marriage Prayer

13By Betty Predmore
Father, today I pray for marriages all across this world. I pray that husbands will love You above all else, and that they will love and treasure their wives, second only to you. I pray that wives will joyfully embrace their roles and serve their husbands and their households out of love and reverence for You and for them. I pray that couples can find a way to invest in their relationship with you and with each other, keeping that a priority always. I pray that they give each other strength when the other is weak, comfort when the other is scared or saddened, and LOVE always. Help them to walk side by side, holding each other accountable, and sharing the joys and sorrows of this life together. And may they seek You first and foremost, in ALL things. Amen.

The Perfect Gift

By:  Betty Predmore

I had the most incredible experience recently! I was able to be in the delivery room as my niece gave birth to her precious baby girl. This was my first time to be present at the actual delivery of a baby, other than my own. It is an entirely different experience as a spectator. My niece was so incredibly strong throughout the process, and seeing that sweet baby come into this world was a wondrous experience that I will never forget.
It made me think back to what that night in Bethlehem must have been like. What a glorious night that must have been! How strong was Mary as she brought our Lord and Savior into the world? Did Joseph hold her hand and comfort her? Did he whisper reassuringly into her ear as she fought through the pain? Did that sweet baby Jesus enter this world with a loud cry or a soft whimper? This baby did not have the creature comforts of a hospital, for he was born in a stable. “And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7) Though this baby was born without the comfort and security of a hospital, He had something far greater. He had the Father in Heaven orchestrating his birth, and nothing could have been safer or more secure than that.
Just like my new little niece was a special gift to her family, baby Jesus was also a gift. He was a gift to this world! He was a promise of hope and salvation to all who accepted Him. “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13) He is the gift that continues to give throughout the ages…the incredible gift of eternity!
As I watched my niece snuggle with her newborn baby, I saw the love and the bond that had already formed. What a great love a parent has for a child. As mothers, we feel that there can be nothing quite like that love we feel for our children. It is such a special bond. This is a point that reminds me how great the love must be that our Father in Heaven has for us. That He would sacrifice his own child for us, for our sins. “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) That is the definition of sacrifice. Why did He do this? His love for us is so great, his compassion so marvelous. He wished that all of us would have the opportunity for an eternal life in glory with Him through Christ Jesus. “ For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.” (John 3:17)
What a gift our salvation is! What an honor to be loved so much by the King of Kings! As we celebrate gift-giving during this Christmas season, let us not forget to give the greatest gift of all by sharing the love of Jesus with those who are lost. This can be done in so many ways…feeding the hungry, providing warm clothes and shelter, or buying gifts for the less fortunate. It can also be done by a smile, a kind word, a hug, and sharing the gospel. It doesn’t matter how you chose to do it, just do it. Share the love of Jesus….He is the perfect gift!

Thankful Every Day

By Betty Predmore

It is November…..the month we set aside each year for giving thanks. This is the time of year when we are supposed to take inventory of our blessings, to be appreciative of all we have been blessed with.

I am of the personal opinion that every month should be a time of Thanksgiving. Every day we should be taking inventory of the blessings that have been given to us and we should be forever grateful to our Father in Heaven who not only supplies all our needs, but also gives beyond measure.

Speaking for myself, I can say with all sincerity that God is a generous God. I marvel each day at the gifts He has poured out upon me and my family. James 1:17 says “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” I am so thankful for my husband, and my beautiful children, and my extended family. I am thankful for my home, which is a respite from the chaos of life. I am thankful for the laughter and giggles, the hugs and hand-holding, the boisterous conversations, and the quiet whispers. I am thankful the innocence of children and the memories of yesterdays. I am thankful for pets, sports, vacations, and rainy days. I am thankful for friendships and sisterhood, and accountability.

I am thankful for church family, my well-worn bible, and praise music. I am thankful for opportunities to serve, and the ability to put my thoughts on paper. I am thankful for others who work with diligence to serve and honor the Lord. I am thankful for prayers and times to “be still” in His presence. I am filled with gratitude for the Holy Spirit and the fact that He resides in my heart.

Most of all, I am thankful for Jesus Christ. I am so thankful that He took on my sins, though I am so undeserving. I am so appreciative of the blood He shed that day on Calvary, so that I can be forgiven time and time again. I am so grateful for my salvation, and the assuredness that I will spend my eternity is that beautiful forever called Heaven. I am so humbly thankful for His love.

I don’t need the calendar to say “November” in order to feel this gratitude. I don’t need a special day set aside to pronounce my thanks. I enjoy Thanksgiving…the food, the fellowship, the opportunity for service, and the opportunity to express my blessings. But I want to live a life that declares my gratitude to my Lord and Savior each and every day. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17 tells me to ” rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I want to wake up each day and say, even on the tough days, “Thank you Lord for this life. Please help me to use it for Your glory!” I want those blessings to always be at the forefront of my mind, so that I never forget all I have to be thankful for. I want to ALWAYS remember to be thankful EVERY DAY!

The Miracle of Sight

By Betty Predmore
I’m sorry, but your son is blind.”. Not words I wanted to hear on that dreary February day almost 23 years ago as I held my sweet little two-month-old baby boy close to my chest. As I absorbed the shock of the doctor’s words, I struggled to hold back my tears and be brave in the face of the news.
I had a nagging feeling that something wasn’t quite right. It had been four years since I had a newborn, and I couldn’t quite remember at what stage they really started following things with their eyes. I knew he wasn’t, and I was pretty sure that he should be. I remember asking the “WHY ME?” questions. I remember being so frustrated and terrified. I wondered how I would ever describe anything to a child who had no idea of color. Would he go through life never knowing what his parents and siblings looked like? Would he never see a sunrise or a smile? How would I explain the beauty of the ocean or the majesty of the forest? How do you describe those things? 2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us “We live by faith, not by sight.” I wanted my son to have faith, but I wanted him to have his sight as well. I remember my aunt telling me that God gave this little boy to us because He knew we would love him and give him the best life we could, despite whatever handicaps he might have. I clung to her words.
Our God is such an awesome and amazing God! He has such a magnificent way of lining things up just perfectly. The day we got the news, a former classmate saw me on my way out of the doctor. I told her what I had just heard. Her sister happened to have her child at the eye specialist (who just happened to be here from San Diego that same day), and she called and got us in within a few hours. These things were not “coincidences”. These were evidence that God is with us, putting His plan together even before we are aware. We weren’t given much hope from the specialist, but our little baby boy had surgery a few days later.
Every church in town was praying for us. People we didn’t even know lifted our family in prayer. People stopped me on the streets to tell me they had prayed for our son. Prayer is so powerful, and God honors the prayer of a righteous person, and He honored the prayers of all those faithful prayer warriors! “Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.” Psalm 30:2. That little boy (who ended up with some pretty thick eyeglasses), was the top reader in his elementary classes, got his driver’s license right on time, and is a living testimony of what God can do when we seek Him. “The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.” Psalm 41:3
Why should that surprise me? We all know what miracles our Lord is capable of. Bartimaeus sat by the road begging, unable to see the passers by due to his blindness. When he realized that Jesus was passing by, he cried out “Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me!” Even though he was asked to be quiet by the crowd, he cried out again, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus called Bartimaeus to him and asked what his need was, to which Bartimaeus replied, “Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.” Jesus honored the faith that Bartimaeus had and said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” This is a beautiful story of the miraculous healing that was so freely given by our Savior, and he did the same for that sweet baby I loved so much.
I never doubt the power of prayer. I never doubt what our God can do. I have seen firsthand the miracles He is capable of. I have seen Him take sadness and turn it to joy. I have experienced the miracle of healing in my family on more than one occasion. I am so grateful for my God who never left me during that time of fear and worry. Even when I did not see Him, He was there. He didn’t leave my son, and He won’t leave you. Open your heart to the Mighty Healer and have faith that He will hear your prayers. Open your eyes to see fully all the gifts He has given you. Be like Bartimaeus…He went from being BY the road, begging for Jesus to being ON the road, following Jesus. He will NEVER leave you, He will NEVER forsake you, He will ALWAYS be at your side.

A Marriage Prayer

13By Betty Predmore

Father, your word says that “two shall become one.” Help us, as couples, to feel unity in our spirit. Help us to live out our marriages as “one”, striving to serve and honor You with our lives and our marriages. Father, we pray that you will guide us along this journey together, helping us to appreciate the blessing of our spouse, helping us to recognize their attributes and minimize our thoughts on those things that cause us discontent. We are not perfect and neither is our spouse, but we can find perfection in You. Help us, Lord, to seek you daily, to love you even more than we love each other, and to allow you to guide our lives, our marriages, and our homes. We pray this in the name of Jesus…Amen.

Preserving My Sacred Space

How often we forget that our bodies are no longer our own once we accept Jesus into our heart. How often we forget that our minds and our hearts also belong to The One who died for our sins.

A sermon I heard recently got me thinking about this, and about how I spend my time…what I focus my mind and my heart on. I must admit, I have felt a lot of conviction over the past few days.

When I take inventory of my life, I have to be honest that I could be making much better use of my time, and using it to please my Lord and Savior much more than I do now. One of my strongholds is social media. Social media is something I use in ministry to share upcoming events, share blogs, and share words of inspiration and encouragement. So often, my intentions when I log onto Facebook is to post an upcoming class or event, share some encouragement, and basically bring the love of Christ to others. This is all good and well, and I am sure that God is pleased with my intent. However, I am not so sure that He is pleased with how my good intentions go astray.

I log in to make my post, intent on sharing God’s Word or a little speck of hope with someone who might be struggling, and I DO make that post. But then my eyes and my thoughts start to wonder, as I scroll down my newsfeed, taking in all the comings, goings, and all the happenings in between of every “friend” who has posted in the last several hours. Before I know it, my few minutes of “working for the Lord’ has turned into an hour or more of perusing the “latest info” on Facebook.
Is that time well spent? Is God happy with my choices? Could that time have been better spent reading to my children, having a real conversation with my husband, catching up on some housework, or better yet…getting into God’s Word? Ladies, are any of you relating to me right now?

You see, I walk around in this body all day, every day. I carry this heart and mind with me wherever I go. Even so, it does not belong to me. It is “Sacred Space” that belongs to the One who saved me. It belongs to the One who went before me, assuring my eternal salvation. It is to be used for His good, for His glory, and for His purpose.

It is so easy for us to get caught up in “the world”, especially when it is so readily available, right at our fingertips. I know I am not the only one who struggles with this. I know some of you know just what I am talking about. My heart’s desire is for God to use me for good, HIS good. In order for Him to do so, I must be focused on His will and His purpose, and not on everyone else’s “stuff”. Perhaps that is why I am struggling in a few areas. Perhaps that is why YOU are struggling in some areas. Are you focusing on God? Are you putting Him above all else? Is your heart and mind (your temple) doing the Lord’s work? Are you guarding your “Sacred Space” from the temptations that can ease their way in and take our thoughts from God?

There’s nothing wrong with “sharing”, “liking”, and “commenting”. I will most likely continue to do so on a daily basis. But my prayer is that I “share” the love of Christ, and I “like” and “comment” on things which are edifying to Him, and that I not let any of it rule my day and keep me from all the blessings He has for me. I want to do my very best to preserve my “Sacred Space”.

Father, we lift up our marriages to you this day. We ask that your Holy Spirit be in our midst, surrounding our marriages with your love, wisdom, and peace. Thank you for that special person you have given us to treasure, love, honor, and respect. Help each of us to see the blessings our marriage brings to us each day. And may we always honor You in all we do as husbands and wives. Amen!

Heavenly Father…how grateful we are for the husbands you have so graciously given us. Father, help us to keep a close guard on this special relationship, making it a top priority in our lives, second only to our relationship with You. Help us to be diligent in taking time for a smile, a word softly spoken, a kiss, a hug, a REAL conversation. Father, we ask that you keep us focused, despite the trials of our day or the busyness of our homes, on being the wives You call us to be. Help us to keep our husbands lifted daily to You. We pray that this most special, most intimate relationship will prosper under Your guidance and care. In Jesus’ name…Amen.
